Seismic Design Competition (SDC)

The Seismic Design Competition (SDC) is the largest international seismic engineering competition organized annually by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) through the Student Leadership Council (SLC).

Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI)

EERI is a non-profit society made up of researchers, geological engineers, architects and civil engineers whose primary goal is to minimize risk by advancing the understanding of the large-scale effects of seismic phenomena.

EERI Student Leadership Council

The EERI Student Leadership Council is an active community that promotes education in the field of seismic engineering, and their mission is to help students to:

The core activities of EERI SLC include:

Seismic Design Competition (SDC)

The competition consists of modeling a complex multi-storey structure made of balsa wood, to be tested in the competition on the vibrating table, which aims to simulate the scale of an earthquake. Teams are judged on their competition presentation, poster, building architecture, ability to respect constraints, analytical predictions of model behavior, and the actual response of the structure during the vibrating table test.

Therefore, this experience offers team members the opportunity to participate in a project that integrates both theoretical and practical aspects of skyscraper modeling from the point of view of cost and structural behavior, thus laying the foundation for civil engineering professionals which ensures a more secure future.

The unfavorable positioning of Romania according to the tectonic plates has led to a tradition in seismic design within UTCB, which promotes and encourages students who wish to develop professionally in this field and provides constant guidance of teaching staff to achieve high-level performance.
